The quality and composition of food influences not only their pet's health but also their well-being and longevity. There are many different food manufacturers on the market today, each offering both dry and wet food, with different ingredients and intended uses. Therefore, choosing the best food for your pet can be truly challenging. So, what should you feed your dog or cat, and what should you consider when buying food? This article will provide you with some practical tips.

Types of food available on the market

Currently, wet, dry, and semi-moist foods are available. Each will differ not only in water content but also in taste, consistency, production method, and storage.

Dry foods typically contain up to 12% of water (moisture). They are generally cheaper than other types of foods and easier to store. Unfortunately, they are also more processed and less palatable, which is why flavor enhancers are often used. These include extruded, air-dried, cold-pressed, and baked foods. Extruded foods are made by subjecting nutrients to high temperatures and pressure in an extruder, then forming them into pellets. This allows for long-term storage, but the high temperature can cause some vitamin loss. In air-dried foods, the ingredients are dried at a low temperature for a long time, removing moisture while retaining most of the nutritional value. Unfortunately, this process is more expensive. In cold-pressed foods, the ingredients are pressed into pellets at a lower temperature than in extruded foods, thus retaining more nutrients but having a shorter shelf life. Finally, baked foods are formed and baked, similar to cakes, in tunnel ovens. Here too, high baking temperatures can cause some vitamin loss.

Wet foods have a higher water content, exceeding 60%. They are made by cooking and mixing the ingredients, then placing them in cans or pouches, and re-cooking them to ensure sterility. These foods are less processed, tastier, more digestible, and help maintain proper hydration. Unfortunately, they have a shorter shelf life after opening and are often more expensive.

Semi-moist foods are essentially a cross between dry and wet foods, typically with a moisture content of 14-60%. They are softer and more flavorful than dry food, which is especially important for dogs and cats who are picky eaters or have difficulty chewing. Unlike wet food, they do not require refrigeration after opening.

Commercially available foods can also be divided based on their intended use. Here are some examples:

Complete foods – these constitute the basis of the diet and can be its sole component. Designed to provide all essential nutrients in the appropriate amounts and proportions.

Complementary foods cannot be the basis of a diet, but only a way to diversify it. They are not properly balanced and will not cover the daily nutritional requirements of a dog or cat.

dietary – intended for animals with specific diseases, allowing them to meet their specific nutritional needs.

How to read the ingredients of dog and cat food?

Before purchasing dog or cat food, it's essential to check its ingredients. Food manufacturers are required to include them on the packaging label, along with the analytical composition. In Europe, food labeling guidelines are defined by the "Code of Good Practice for Pet Food Labeling" developed by FEDIAF, an association of manufacturers. Based on these guidelines, food manufacturers should create labels that are uniform, transparent, and provide consumers with as much relevant information as possible.

Raw material composition

First, pay attention to the ingredient list. Manufacturers are required to list ingredients on the label in order of quantity used. For both healthy dogs and cats, it's important that the protein source, such as meat or fish, be listed first. The description should be clear and precise, indicating the specific protein source, e.g., "chicken" or "beef." Lower-quality foods may include more general information, such as "meat meal" or "animal products." In this case, we don't know what's actually ending up in our pet's bowl, as this term covers not only meat but also offal, bones, and other animal parts such as hides, feathers, horns, and hooves. Labels on very low-quality foods may include "animal by-products," which are animal-derived materials not intended for human consumption or that humans don't consume.

Please note that the amount of meat listed in the ingredients refers to the weight of the raw materials before processing. During production, most of the water evaporates, which means the final weight of the meat in the finished food is lower than in its raw state.

In addition to animal-based ingredients, pet foods also contain plant-based ingredients. These often serve as sources of carbohydrates in pet foods. These include grains, legumes, vegetables, and fruit.

At the end of the ingredients list we usually find additives, including:

sensory additives – such as dyes or flavors that improve the appearance, smell or taste of the food,

nutritional supplements – supplementing the diet with essential ingredients, e.g. vitamins, macronutrients, amino acids, fatty acids,

· technological additives – facilitating the production process, ensuring the durability and stability of the food; this group includes preservatives, stabilizers, antioxidants,

· zootechnical additives – which support the proper functioning of the animal body, e.g. probiotics or digestive enzymes.

Analytical components

According to the Code of Good Practice for Labeling Pet Food for Dogs and Cats, developed by FEDIAF based on EU regulations, the analytical composition of pet food labels is mandatory. This information describes the content of individual nutrients in a given product. These values are expressed as a percentage (%) and include protein, fat, fiber, and ash. The moisture content of the food must also be stated if it exceeds 14%, which applies to wet and semi-moist foods.

Crude protein is a nutrient present in many plant (grains, legumes) and animal (meat, bone meal) products. Animal proteins are of higher quality for dogs and cats, and are often more digestible. Ideally, their content in dog and cat food should be at least 40-50%. Protein is crucial for muscle building, tissue regeneration, and proper body function.

Crude fat – a source of energy – provides 2.5 times more energy per gram than protein or carbohydrates. It provides flavor and aroma and facilitates the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins such as A, D, E, and K. This term also encompasses saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, including essential fatty acids such as omega 3 and 6, which are essential for the proper functioning of the nervous system, immune system, joints, skin, and coat. It is important that the fat content in food does not exceed 30% for dogs and cats. Excess fat in the diet can contribute to obesity, digestive problems, and liver and pancreatic stress.

Crude fiber – the amount of indigestible plant parts (e.g., cellulose, lignin, hemicellulose) contained in a product, i.e., insoluble fiber. It is not a source of energy or building material, but plays a very important role in the digestive system. Pet food manufacturers rarely provide soluble fiber content due to the more expensive and time-consuming method of determining it. The optimal crude fiber concentration in complete dog and cat food should be up to 5% dry matter, although in weight-loss diets, its content may be higher.

Raw ash – refers to the content of minerals that remain after a food sample is completely burned in the laboratory (including calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium). Therefore, it is not a harmful additive, but a measure of the content of minerals important for health.

If we want to compare specific foods, we need to convert their composition into dry matter; special calculators available on the Internet are helpful in this regard.

Where on the label can we find information about the amount of carbohydrates in the stone?

You won't find them listed directly in the "analytical ingredients" section on food labels – they are not legally required. However, you can calculate their approximate amount by subtracting the sum of protein, fat, fiber, ash, and moisture from 100%. Does it make sense to list them in food? Yes, absolutely! Dogs, as facultative carnivores, can handle a moderate amount of these in their diet. The opposite is true for cats – they are obligate carnivores. Their carbohydrate requirement is minimal, and excess carbohydrates can burden the pancreas, leading to obesity or diabetes. Their content in cat food should not exceed 10%, preferably up to 5%.

What amounts of declared raw materials does the food contain?

On dog and cat food labels, we often see terms like "with beef," "rich in chicken," or "salmon flavored." While these terms sound appetizing, the Code of Good Practice clearly regulates what these terms mean and how much of each ingredient should actually be included in the food. Below are a few examples:

“flavor X” = less than 4% X

“of X” = at least 4% X

“rich in X” = at least 14% X

“ dinner X” = at least 26% X

As we can see, buying food with "salmon" or "rabbit" doesn't necessarily mean it's the main ingredient; it usually only makes up a few percent of the total. To make an informed choice about the right food for your dog or cat, it's crucial to read product labels carefully and extract key information. Labels offer a wealth of valuable information that will help you choose the best food for your pet.

What should you check before buying dog or cat food?

Analytical components – check the amount of protein, fat, fiber and ash – this is the basis for assessing nutritional value.

The ingredient list – look at what's listed first – this is the main ingredient in the food. Avoid plant-based ingredients listed first, or "products of plant or animal origin.".

Declarations such as "with chicken", "rich in beef" - remember that the law specifies the minimum percentages of these raw materials.

Functional additions – avoid unnecessary additions.

Moisture content – try to choose wet food, especially for cats, which naturally drink little, less than dogs. Dry food will further dehydrate them, which may negatively impact urinary tract function (especially the kidneys) in the future.

Check whether the food is complete and can be the basis of the diet.

Summary

For the sake of our pets' health, we should carefully analyze the ingredients before purchasing any food. Pay attention to both the analytical components and the list of ingredients listed on the label to make a good choice. The composition of dog and cat food is of paramount importance. Choosing food wisely is an investment in the health, well-being, and longevity of your four-legged friend.

Bibliography

Regulation (EC) No 1831/2003 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 22 September 2003 on additives for use in animal nutrition. https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/PL/TXT/?uri=CELEX%3A32003R1831

FEDIAF Nutritional Guidelines for Complete and Complementary Pet Food for Cats and Dogs – FEDIAF Nutritional Guidelines, 2023;

Ceregrzyn M., Barszczewska B.
