List of prohibited and harmful foods.

Proper dog nutrition is key to their good health, activity, and long life. It's important to remember that dogs have different digestive systems, metabolisms, and nutrient requirements than humans. Therefore, what's good for humans may be toxic for dogs.

Why is the list of prohibited products important?

Humans are omnivores, while dogs are considered facultative carnivores. This means that their diet should consist primarily of meat and animal products, and thanks to evolutionary changes brought about by domestication, they have also gained the ability to digest plant materials. The type of food consumed is determined by different anatomical and physiological adaptations. There are many differences between dogs and humans – from differences in dentition, to the lack of enzymes like salivary amylase in dogs, to the varying lengths of their digestive tracts. Awareness of these differences is a fundamental element of responsible pet care. Feeding "human food" and table scraps can lead to serious health problems and even life-threatening situations. Therefore, every pet owner should familiarize themselves with products that may be toxic to their pet and never feed them.

What can a dog eat?

The foundation of a dog's diet should be a high-quality, complete, high-meat food or a BARF or BACF diet, which provides all the essential nutrients in the right proportions. To ensure your pet is receiving a properly balanced diet, it's best to consult with a pet nutritionist. This will ensure you're giving your pet the best possible nutrition, with meals tailored to their age, size, activity level, and health.

In addition to food or a BARF or BACF diet, you can give your pet vegetables and fruits as a supplement or high-quality treats. However, remember that these will only serve as a supplement and should not replace the main diet.

A properly balanced dog diet should contain appropriate amounts of protein, fat, carbohydrates, as well as vitamins and minerals, so as to provide the dog with all the necessary nutrients in the right proportions, preferably divided into several meals.

What vegetables can dogs eat?

As I mentioned, the foundation of a dog's diet should be meat or a high-meat diet. However, the daily diet can be supplemented with vegetables and fruit, which are a source of vitamins, minerals, and fiber. However, they shouldn't dominate a healthy dog's diet. It's important to remember that not every dog will tolerate such supplements well. If your pet feels unwell or experiences digestive issues after eating vegetables or fruit, it's best to avoid them.

When it comes to vegetables, they should be cooked and chopped, without salt or spices. This will facilitate digestion and nutrient absorption. Below, you'll find a list of safe vegetables you can include in your pet's diet.

carrots – also raw,

parsley root,

pumpkin,

zucchini,

sweet potatoes,

potatoes,

tomato – also raw,

cucumber – also raw,

sweet pepper – also raw,

celery,

asparagus,

parsnip,

beetroot.

A dog's diet can also be supplemented with some fermented foods, such as pickled cucumbers or sauerkraut. However, these should be fed in moderation, and it's best to choose those with the lowest salt content.

What fruits can dogs eat?

Fruits contain natural sugars, so they should be fed in moderation – as a treat rather than a regular part of the diet, they should not exceed 5% per day. Therefore, their feeding should be limited to overweight or diabetic pets. It's best to choose seasonal fruits, which will give you greater assurance that they are fresh and nutritious. Remember to wash them and remove any peels, seeds, and pits before feeding them to your dog.

Fruits that can be safely fed to dogs:

apple,

banana,

pear,

strawberry,

bilberry,

raspberry,

watermelon,

melon,

peach,

nectarines,

plums.

Other dog-safe products

To diversify your daily diet, you can also introduce:

cooked meat (without bones and spices),

cooked fish (without bones),

eggs (raw or heat-treated),

natural yogurt and kefir (without sugar and additives),

salmon, krill or algae oil.

Every new product is worth introducing gradually, observing your dog's reaction. If you have any doubts or special nutritional needs, it is best to consult a veterinarian or animal dietitian about the diet.

List of prohibited products – don't give this to your dog!

Chocolate and cocoa

They contain theobromine, which dogs metabolize very slowly. This leads to its accumulation in the body and toxic effects. Consuming them can cause gastrointestinal symptoms, seizures, arrhythmias, and even cardiac arrest. The higher the cocoa content in chocolate, the greater the risk of developing symptoms of toxicity.

Grapes and raisins

Giving them to dogs can lead to acute kidney damage and even death within a few hours. Initial symptoms of poisoning include vomiting, loss of appetite, lethargy, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. These fruits should not be given to dogs at all, as the toxic dose has not been precisely determined. Some dogs will show no symptoms after eating several hundred grams, while others may die after eating just a few fruits.

Avocado

After consumption, dogs may experience gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea and vomiting. Eating large amounts may lead to pancreatitis due to the fruit's high fat content. Swallowing the pit may lead to intestinal obstruction. The toxic dose of avocado for dogs has not been determined, so for safety reasons, it is not recommended to administer it.

Onion, garlic, leek and chives

Vegetables from the onion family contain sulfur compounds, which damage a dog's red blood cells, leading to anemia. They are toxic in both raw, cooked, and dried forms. Symptoms may appear slowly and include weakness, pale gums, rapid breathing, kidney failure, and stomach problems.

Xylitol

This sweetener used in chewing gum, sweets, and "sugar-free" products. In dogs, it causes a sudden release of insulin, which can lead to dangerous drop in blood sugar levels, and can also lead to liver damage. Symptoms appear quickly and include weakness, vomiting, seizures, and even loss of consciousness.

Macadamia nuts

They are toxic to dogs, although the exact mechanism of action is unknown. They can cause neurological and muscular symptoms, which have been observed after consuming as little as 2.4 g of these nuts per kilogram of a dog's body weight. Symptoms include: Weakness in the limbs, impaired coordination, muscle tremors, vomiting, fever, and apathy. Due to the high fat content, these symptoms can also contribute to the development of pancreatitis.

Yeast dough

Raw yeast dough can pose a serious health risk to dogs. ferment in the dog's stomach, causing painful flatulence and even the risk of stomach torsion. Additionally, during fermentation, alcohol, which can lead to poisoning, weakness, disorientation, and in severe cases, coma.

Products harmful to dogs

In addition to clearly toxic products, there is also a group of foods that they do not pose a direct threat to the dog's life, however, they can cause digestive problems, nutritional deficiencies, or other health problems. Therefore, they should be fed in moderation and only if the dog responds well to them.

Milk and dairy products

A study published in 2021 noted that dogs from the Middle East and Europe, through evolution and domestication, have adapted to digest lactose. A mutation encoding lactase, an enzyme necessary for lactose digestion, was found in their genome. Therefore, dogs from these geographic regions are adapted to digest lactose and can consume dairy products. However, with age, the activity of this enzyme decreases, which can manifest as gastrointestinal problems after consuming dairy products. Furthermore, caution should be exercised when feeding these products to animals with intestinal diseases and food allergies, as they may develop intolerance or allergy to milk proteins.

Cat food

Dogs and cats have different anatomical adaptations and nutritional requirements. In most healthy dogs, a single meal of cat food will usually not cause any adverse reactions. This may not be the case for animals with sensitive digestive systems – even a single meal can cause diarrhea or vomiting. Particular caution should be exercised with sick dogs, for example, those with a history of pancreatitis; high-fat cat food can lead to a relapse. A similar risk applies to dogs with food allergies – a single feeding of a product containing a different protein source may result in the recurrence of allergy symptoms, such as itching or skin inflammation. Long-term feeding of cat food to a dog is inadvisable and can have numerous health consequences, such as obesity, overweight, nutritional deficiencies, and internal organ strain.

Bones

Although often associated with a dog's natural diet, consuming them can be very dangerous. Cooked bones easily break into sharp fragments, which can damage the mouth, esophagus, or intestines, and also cause constipation. Raw bones also pose a risk of choking or injury, so they are not recommended as part of the diet. Currently, even BARF diets do not recommend them; instead, other sources of calcium are used, such as calcium carbonate, calcium citrate, calcium from algae, or eggshells.

Raw meat, eggs and fish

If your pet isn't accustomed to a raw food diet, such as BARF, or suffers from underlying conditions, such as gastrointestinal issues, sudden consumption of raw animal products may lead to gastrointestinal symptoms. A raw food diet isn't suitable for every pet, as it carries a higher risk of microbial contamination than a cooked diet. If you want to introduce these foods into your pet's diet, it's best to heat-treat them and introduce raw foods gradually, observing your dog's response.

Salt, sugar

Too much salt is harmful to your dog. It can lead to dehydration, severe thirst, vomiting, diarrhea, and in more severe cases to neurological disorders (tremors, disorientation, seizures). When it comes to sweeteners, most are not intended for dogs and can cause digestive problems. As I mentioned, xylitol is particularly dangerous. As for sugar itself, it's not toxic, but consuming it can contribute to obesity, diabetes, digestive problems, and dental disease.

What dogs can't eat - table

It's important to remember that consuming these products won't always have a negative impact on your pet's health. It all depends on the dose – the more your pet consumes, the greater the risk of poisoning and more severe symptoms.

Toxic products

Products not recommended

chocolate and cocoa

bones

grapes and raisins

cat food

onion, garlic, leek, chives

salt

avocado

sugar

xylitol

macadamia nuts

yeast dough

Symptoms of poisoning in dogs – how to recognize them?

Food poisoning in dogs can range from mild to life-threatening. It all depends on the type and amount of food consumed. The more the animal eats, the more severe the toxicity symptoms will be, and the more life-threatening the animal may be. The most common symptoms include:

vomiting and diarrhea, often sudden and intense,

apathy, weakness, loss of appetite,

excessive salivation,

abdominal pain, bloating,

muscle tremors, balance disorders, seizures,

rapid or irregular breathing,

pale gums or jaundice,

behavioral changes – anxiety, confusion.

How to help a dog with food poisoning?

If your pet has eaten any toxic products, consult a veterinarian as soon as possible. Waiting until the first symptoms of poisoning appear can lead to multi-organ failure and ultimately, death. Time is of the essence; prompt treatment can protect your pet from life-threatening consequences. Secure the packaging or any leftover product your dog has eaten – take it with you to the vet. Do not feed your dog any more food or induce vomiting yourself unless directed to do so by your veterinarian.

Supporting your dog's health – ANIMALACTIN supplementation®

Even the best-balanced diet may not always meet a dog's full vitamin and trace element needs.
